Since 2021, the MOOC "Writing and publishing a scientific article", designed and run by IRD, has been providing PhD students and young researchers with the keys to meeting the expectations of scientific publishers. Available in French, English and Spanish, it has already attracted over 75,000 registrants from 145 countries. The fifth edition, enriched this year with new content on open science, has been available since July 21, 2025 on the FUN-MOOC platform.

For the 2024/2025 session, over 12,000 students took the online course, mainly from France, but also from countries in the Mediterranean, West and Central Africa, Madagascar, South America and the Caribbean. On the strength of this success, the MOOC is being offered for a fifth session, open until July 17, 2026.

Thanks to its videos, course materials and practical sheets, the MOOC guides learners step by step through the scientific writing process and the various stages of publication in international journals - from bibliographic research to article submission, via the drafting of the various sections. With the support of IRD's Mission Science Ouverte (MSO), this new edition features enhanced content on research data transparency, open access publishing and the use of open archives. At the end of the twenty-hour training course, a badge of achievement is issued. Nearly 13,000 certificates have already been issued since the course was launched 4 years ago.

Hosted by IRD researchers and teacher-researchers from the École supérieure polytechnique (ESP) of the Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar (UCAD) and the École nationale supérieure polytechnique de Yaoundé (ENSP) of the Université Yaoundé Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar (UCAD) and the École nationale supérieure polytechnique de Yaoundé (ENSP) of the Université Yaoundé 1, This MOOC is part of IRD's mission to build capacity with its partners, with the support of the ACE-Partner project and the SEP2D program. It is the first part of the "Cross-disciplinary skills for research jobs" series offered by IRD on FUN-MOOC.
