Sexual violence in the field: a booklet for awareness, prevention and action
An essential tool for researchers, students and supervisors
The booklet "Violences sexuelles sur le terrain: pour une prise de conscience collective et une meilleure prévention des risques en sciences sociales" is aimed at all those involved in field research - researchers, PhD students, students, supervisors - as well as higher education and research establishments. It aims to break the persistent silence surrounding sexual violence (SGBV) experienced in the field, to better recognize it and contribute to a culture of prevention, training and action.
About the booklet
Sexual violence in the context of field surveys is frequent but rarely expressed. They are still rarely included in survey training courses, in teaching areas, or in occupational risk prevention schemes.
To address this shortcoming, this document offers :
- Concrete examples of situations experienced by researchers and their students;
- A sociological perspective on the mechanisms that encourage such violence;
- A map of the resources available to victims, witnesses and supervisors.
Objectives of the booklet
- Inform about the diversity of forms of sexual violence;
- Prevent by including these issues in training and professional practices;
- Support people who are directly or indirectly confronted with such violence;
- Promote collective awareness in the scientific community.
A collective initiative
This booklet was designed by a group of female researchers, doctoral students and teacher-researchers in anthropology, sociology and archaeology. It was born of their own confrontation with situations of violence, often in indifference or isolation, and their desire to change practices within higher education and research.
This project has been supported by numerous institutions:
π Université Toulouse-Jean Jaurès (Mission égalité - lutte contre les VSS), CNRS (Mission pour la place des femmes), EHESS, EUR Genre, GIS Institut du Genre, LISST, IDEAS, IRIS, TRACES, CNE, etc.
